I'm giving this 5 stars as an enjoyable read. It has some rough spots where a good editor could smooth things out, and the characters are still evolving (as part of a multi-book series which I am reading in chronological order). I certainly would not have made my first protagonist a woman of 50 who ends up being badly injured by the bad guys--- 40 or even 35 would have been better. Yes she's one resilient lady; but take it from me, a 50 year old just does not have the physical resilience of someone a decade younger. Especially one working around horses and some of the people one runs into. I am reading the entire series, am past #3 by now, and am enjoying the growth of characters and relationships --- this author is doing a pretty good job with interweaving plot and characters.

Double Exposure a Kovak Quaid horse mystery Book 1 Toni Leland 9780985530938 Books Reviews

This book has an interesting plot and is developed well. I liked the story line and the mingling of personality from Kovak and Quaid. Don't know if I would like another story with both characters as well, as I 'm not sure how they can be developed further.
What a great massive puzzle. Murder, horse stealing and fraud. Wow.. so many lives involved and so many story lines that slowly, ever so slowly meet up. Oh and did I mention romance? I didn't?? Well that's in this story also. Kim Kovak is a master at photography, mostly horses, mostly show horses and her job takes her all over the world on occasions. She really loves her job and she is good at it but before her career as a equine photographer, she was a cop. A very good one at that. She also was part of the mounted patrol and really enjoyed it. When disaster happened she lost her ability to do her job. She lost her beloved partner "Red" and she left the world of policing.. well now it looks like she has returned to her roots in an effort to stop a ring of horse thieves who will stop at nothing to keep the money rolling. In the process, she runs across an insurance investigator Garrett Quaid who is with a company that has been paying lots of money, way too much money in fact, for horses who seem to be disappearing when a "ringer" is put in place of the original winning show horse. Together they form an alliance but it takes them a lot of time to give in and work together. She is impatient, he doesn't want her nose stuck in his business but unfortunately they both hold pieces to this involved puzzle.
A great story line and lots of good action keeps you turning the pages. You do get a chance to really know your characters. Something I always look for in a book. The funny thing is at the end of the book with certain "strings" not yet pulled together, you get an "ah ha " moment and the book is over but it feels like there should be one more chapter to pull those string ends in and tie them in a finished knot. Maybe in a second book? I have no idea but it doesn't stop the book from being a very nice read. Maybe later Toni Leland will add a second book and make a closed bow out of the final chapter.
I almost didn't get this book. Reluctant to buy a book by an author I don't know even at this price but this book was well worth it. Good mystery and lots of horses to keep my interest. Kept me guessing until the end. I will get the next one in the series and look forward to reading it.
I enjoyed this book and will be reading more from this author. I almost didn't buy it after reading the two negative reviews, but I'm very glad I ignored them. There was nothing kinky or sexual about the relationship between the heroine and one of the horses. Maybe the reviewer who mentioned that knows very little about horses. Don't be put off by the negative reviews, if you like a mystery and love horses it's a book for you.
I enjoyed the story and the horses especially. But, I genuinely thought at first that had not downloaded the entire book when I reached the ending. It was odd. I understand what the author did but it felt awkward to me. That's just my personal opinion nor does it really impact my enjoyment of the book. I know there are more in the series and I will happily read on. Loved the characters and the fact she can be 50 AND not be senile! Thanks from us older girls who ride on.
I read most of this fast paced mystery in one day and thoroughly enjoyed it. Will definitely go on to the next installment. If you like mysteries involving horses, or any animal, for that matter, read this book. It will stir strong emotions and also warm your heart. A true bond with an animal is a wonderful and unconditional love, as the author depicts here.
After reading Toni Leland's book "Rescue Me" I was looking forward to reading another book by her. Rescue Me was good and I've actually gone back and read it a couple times. But this one left me up in the air....actually I was up in the air through most of it. It wandered and had several story lines and I'm still not sure what happened. Then it just ended. I am going to go on and read "Balancing Act" because I know that not every book in a series is "the best". I just felt it could have had more direction and a better ending.
I'm giving this 5 stars as an enjoyable read.
